Queen Mrs. Marian Alice Ofurie

Queen Mrs. Marian Alice Ofurie was a woman of unwavering faith, remarkable strength, and boundless compassion. She lived a life dedicated to God, her family, her profession, and her community. Her legacy is one of resilience, service, humility, and unconditional love.

Born in Enugu, Nigeria, to the distinguished ODEGBE family of Ewu, Edo State, Nigeria. Marian was raised in a large and accomplished family. Many of her siblings excelled in their respective professions, including medicine, law enforcement, and public service. From an early age, Marian demonstrated a caring spirit and a passion for helping others, qualities that led her to pursue a career in nursing.

In the early 1960s, she enrolled in nursing school and began a fulfilling career as a nurse practitioner. She was deeply committed to caring for the sick and found immense joy in serving mothers and assisting in the delivery of countless babies. During this period, she met the love of her life, His Royal Highness E. E. Ofurie, the Ovie (Ova II) of Okpe in the Isoko Kingdom. Their marriage was blessed with enduring love, mutual respect, and a shared commitment to family until his passing in the year 2003.

As the Nigerian Civil War erupted also Known as the Biafran War from July 6,1967 to January 15,1970, Marian's greatest concern became the safety of her young family. Demonstrating extraordinary courage and wisdom, she learned to speak seven Nigerian languages, enabling her family to blend into different communities during a time of uncertainty and danger. Her ability to adapt helped protect her children from the ethnic tensions of the war. Beyond caring for her own family, she also welcomed her younger siblings and members of her husband's family into her home in Lagos, generously providing them with love, care, and stability.

Marian was blessed with five sons—two sets of twins and one additional son. She devoted herself wholeheartedly to raising them with strong Christian values, teaching them humility, integrity, discipline, and compassion. Her greatest joy was seeing her children grow into responsible men who would make meaningful contributions to society.

During the 1960s through the 1990s, Marian and her husband became widely admired throughout Nigeria. They were known for their gracious hospitality, generosity, and vibrant social lives. Together, they associated with many prominent personalities while remaining approachable and beloved by friends, family, and their community. Her husband was an accomplished banker, respected traditional ruler, and distinguished social figure, and together they exemplified dignity, elegance, and service.

Following her nursing career, Marian joined the National Oil & Chemical Marketing Company (NOCM), affiliated with Shell BP, in Lagos, Nigeria where she served as a stenographer and executive secretary. After retiring from corporate employment in the late 1970s, her entrepreneurial spirit led her to establish Mariansons Nigeria Limited, where she served as Chairman and Managing Director. Through her business, she engaged in the distribution of building materials, jewelry, beer, and wines, earning the respect of colleagues and business associates alike.

Her entrepreneurial pursuits took her across Europe, including Belgium and England, where she expanded her business interests and sought opportunities to build a brighter future for her family. Her vision and determination ultimately opened doors that enabled her children to pursue education and successful careers in the United States.

In the 1980s and 1990s, Marian spent increasing amounts of time in the United States before eventually settling there. Her passion for healthcare never diminished. Determined to continue serving others, she completed additional nursing education and certifications in the United States before resuming her nursing career. She faithfully served patients at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts for more than a decade, providing compassionate and professional care until her retirement in 2012.

Outside her professional life, Marian had a deep appreciation for fashion and culture. She was known for her impeccable sense of style and her elegant use of African fabrics, often designing unique outfits that reflected both her creativity and pride in her heritage.

Those who knew Marian will remember her as a gentle, patient, humble, and joyful woman whose kindness touched countless lives. She was always willing to lend a helping hand, offer wise counsel, and encourage others to pursue excellence while remaining humble. Although she was married to royalty, she never sought recognition or status. Instead, she preferred to be known simply as a loving mother to all—a woman whose heart was open to everyone who crossed her path.

Above all else, Marian's greatest devotion was to her Christian faith. She faithfully served in numerous leadership positions within different churches before becoming a dedicated member of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG). She was passionate about sharing the Gospel, encouraging others in their walk with Christ, and leading many to a deeper relationship with God. Her faith was evident not only in her words but also in the way she lived—with grace, humility, generosity, and unwavering trust in God's promises.

Mrs. Marian Alice Ofurie leaves behind a lasting legacy of faith, courage, compassion, and selfless service. She demonstrated that true greatness is found not in titles or possessions, but in a life lived for God and in service to others. Her influence lives on through her children, grandchildren, family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives she touched with her kindness, wisdom, and love.

Though she is no longer with us in body, her legacy will continue to inspire generations to come. We celebrate a life well lived, a race well run, and a faithful servant who has now entered into the eternal rest of her Lord and Savior.

Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend Queen Marian's visitation Saturday, August 15, 2026 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. with a funeral service to follow in Redeemed Christian Church of God,  319 Upham St., Melrose, Saturday, August 15, 2026 from 9 a.m.-11 a.m. with a funeral service to follow at 11 a.m.  Queen Marian will be laid to rest at Pine Grove Cemetery, Lynn.  Arrangements by the Cafasso & Sons Funeral Home, 65 Clark St. EVERETT.
